First he lighted up lives through his amazing songs but now he is lighting up places through his “Akon Lighting Africa” Initiative.
He started this initiative back in 2014 along with Samba Bathily and Thione. Their initiative was to provide electricity through solar energy. Akon and Thione Niang was born in Kaolock, a region in Senegal where there was no electricity. So in 2013, they decided that they will work to bring light in the lives of its people. And this weekend Akon also added Gambia and Cape Verde in his project.
Saren Pateh, a village of Gambia, was the latest one to lighten up but his venture. Solar Street light were lighted up this week and it brought light on the faces of 4,000 people.
Akon in his recent interview stated “Now is the time for us to really focus. And I think if we focus and we give ourselves ten years of focus, development and unity, I guarantee you on everything I love, we will succeed.”
Akon also revealed that he is currently in touch with ministers of other cities and he will announce a good news soon.
Engineering Supervisor of the project was also there. He added “Thank you very much. I think this is a very timely initiative. It’s a very important project in the sense that without energy there can’t be any development.
“So it is very timely and it’s a very cost-effective solution and I’m very happy that it involves training of youth which is going to create jobs. So that’s what the country needs.”
According to reports from International Agency Projections, if these ventures continue lighting up Africa with the same speed, one billion people will have access to electricity by 2040.
